Equipment Basics: What a DJ Brings
A professional DJ does not just show up with a laptop and some speakers. Here is what to expect from a well-equipped DJ setup.
Sound System
The core of any DJ setup is the PA (public address) system. This includes powered speakers sized for your venue, a subwoofer for bass, and a mixer to control audio levels. For larger venues, DJs may bring additional speakers to ensure even coverage throughout the space.
Microphones
Expect at least one wireless microphone for speeches and announcements. Wedding DJs often bring two — one for the MC and one for toasts. Wired backup microphones are a sign of a prepared professional.
Lighting
Basic DJ lighting includes a dance-floor light setup — moving heads, LED washes, or intelligent lights that sync to the music. Many DJs also offer uplighting to transform your venue with colour. Premium setups may include monogram projectors and pin spots for centerpieces.
DJ Controller & Software
Modern DJs use a controller connected to a laptop running professional software like Serato, Rekordbox, or Virtual DJ. This lets them beatmatch, EQ, and blend tracks seamlessly. The controller is essentially their instrument.
Backup Equipment
A reliable DJ carries backup cables, a spare laptop or USB drives with their music library, extra microphones, and sometimes even a backup speaker. If something fails mid-event, a professional can swap it out without missing a beat.
Setup & Power Requirements
DJs typically need 1-2 standard power outlets on separate circuits. Setup takes 60-90 minutes for a standard event. Make sure your venue can accommodate the power requirements — outdoor events may need a generator.
